This thing really is great. It is true that you can get 50hrs. of use off of one AA battery. I have had this MD player for two years and I love it! It is just a rock solid machine; that's all there is to it. The discs are great too. they are small, lite and easy to carry. They are pretty cheep(.50 app.) too, considering that they hold five hours of tones. The only thing about them is that you can't find them in stores, but you can get them on Amazon.com. It is not an ipod, but, in some ways I thank it is better. For one thing, it is SOOOO much cheaper, and frankly, it's more reliable than an ipod because there's not as much that can go wrong. It's not as sophisticated as an ipod. Though it's not quite as small and portable as an ipod, it really does have some advantages over it, I think. I am sorry that MD players never realy caught on, because they are realy cool. I wish more people knew about them. So, if your looking at this, GET ONE! You can afford it and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I love this thing. I really really do. The only MP3 player I've owned before this was an original ipod and while I miss the cool little rotaty-wheel-a-ma-jig-thingy, I'm more than willing to give it up considering the price difference.

I've had my unit for about 3 months now. I thought it sounded great out of the box. Unlike some of the other reviews I haven't had to mess with the equalizer settings but then I'm no audiophile so that might be part of it. The headphones are great imo. They fit in my ears fine as did my iPhone ones so assuming you have average sized ears you're going to be OK. Battery life is pretty good. I can go about 3 days without a charge (usually listen 5-6 hrs at work), though radio tends to drain it faster. Reception on the radio is pretty decent too so no complaints there.

I haven't really used it much for video. I tried a few formats and didn't have much luck with them even though they are supposedly supported. They worked if I used the walkman's file transfer tool which converts the vids to an appropriate format. This is fine except for the fact it doesn't give you a status on the conversion so you have no idea how long it'll take to convert and then copy over the video. I did find that if you created an avi or wmv clip with windows movie maker that will work without have to convert it.

Some other negatives are that the screen and plastic smudge easily. This is minor and pretty much a complaint I have with most new devices. Too many manufacturers going for that high gloss look these days. Anyway forget that bit, and buy this thing if you're in the market for a budget MP3 player. It's definitely a great value.


Update: I've started to notice some software bugs lately and they only happen with really long files like podcasts. Happens randomly after a rewind/forward. Once you hit play the nav buttons stop responding. You can still turn the system off but you can't rewind/forward or pause. No software updates from Sony to fix this. I don't think they give a damn. I'm knocking this baby down to 4 stars because despite that I still like this player and most of the time it works fine.
PS: I noticed some people complaining about slow forward speed. Hit pause and then hit fwd. It goes much faster.

The Sony 4g mp3 player is terrific!! Not only is it a beautiful shade of red, but the quality is terrific. I've had one for 2 years with NO problems, so I bought this identical one for my daughter. It lasts longer than the San Disk, as her first one that we bought at the same time, died out after a year. The only negative I can find with it, is that you cannot remove songs off of the player, or so I never found a way. But, that's okay, if I'm getting great quality for a very decent price. It's definitely worth purchasing.

Cons:
When you fastforward/fastreverse, it does not accelerate, by which I mean the rate of moving through the file does not increase with time you hold the button down. This is not good with large files.

The low profile of the control buttons on the side (volume, hold, speaker on/off) makes them difficult to use. I use a case, and had to cut a hole where the volume control is to make it workable.

Pros:
The software is GREAT. Drag and drop onto the loader to download files or use Explorer. Move easily through the directories, with a folder section so you can see how your files are organized w/o the categories. Do this while something is playing w/o interruption.

It has a hole to hook a lanyard onto. This is important if you can't easily use a belt or armband. (You'll probably want to buy an accessories kit, get a screen protector, case, charger etc.)

When you navigate with the center button, it uses clicks -- not the hokey rotating motion taken by similar designs I believe from the iPod -- so movement is predictable. It charges quickly and the charge is long-lasting. It seems sturdy with a good, solid feel to it.

The speaker is nice for audiobooks if for some reason wearing the device is impractical or uncomfortable. The sound might be a bit tinny for enjoying music, but it is loud enough.

Other comments:
I'm very pleased with this device, and I'm a serious player user for a long time. I use only the mp3 player however, and cannot comment on the other various functions like radio, voice recording, video. I have had a series of iRiver players (OK) and a SanDisk player (junky knockoff of this device called a Fuze). Everything seems well thought out -- and works intuitively. I was using it w/o problems minutes after opening the package. Sony knows their stuff -- this is obviously the product of much experience, and worth the money.

I've had this for about 8 months with constant use. After all that time, I find this device to be solid, but not without its flaws.

I read reviews about the surface getting scratched really easily (before I bought it) and sure enough, walking around with it in my pocket on campus had it mildly scratched in a few days. No big deal, I only care that it holds my music and plays it well. This device is also really lightweight, so carrying it in my pocket was a joy compared to other players I've had over the years.

Battery life on this device varies. If you keep the default brightness setting, your battery will drain like there's no tomorrow. I've turned my brightness down and can now get several hours of use. You'll also want to make use of the power save feature, where the screen blanks out (but still plays) when no buttons are being pressed.

The user interface is really nice, there's enough here so that you can get to what you need to pretty easily. It came with transfer software but I never installed it. I use Windows Media Player to sync up, but you also have the option to go straight into the device's directory from your computer to add/remove files. In other words, you have a choice with this device, you don't HAVE to use SONY software to get music onto the player.

My biggest disappointment with this device is the trouble the power on/off mechanism causes. You have to turn the button lock on whenever you turn it off to avoid accidentally pressing a button and having it stay on for hours, draining your battery. Still a great player.

We purchased this player for our daughter in 4th grade over a month ago. She has already enjoyed great use of it--and loves the external speakers so she can listen to songs with others. [Beware if you really don't want to listen to your child playing the same songs over and over yourself!] Her Dad has done all the downloading and media purchasing/playlist assembly and we have loaded songs from personal discs, iTunes, and others--especially easy as it works well with our Sony desktop computer (a bonus we didn't think about). I found it a bit tricky to navigate the menu initially (didn't read any instructions) but then was able to access the FM radio function. Battery life has been good and we did purchase a separate car charger. She's the envy of friends who have other branded players that cost more and her Dad and I liked the idea of the "walkman" brand we loved as children of the 80's. It's been pretty durable as she lets her 2 year old brother walk around with it and it's survived. Quality of sound is fine to me, but if played too loud on the speakers might be a bit "tinny". I'm not too discerning with this, but my husband is. I am thinking of getting one for my own use, now.

The MD player works great, the software is a little unstable, but still usable With a couple more updates It might be comparable to Itunes. From reading older reviews, I guess it's already been vastly improved. Don't let the software deter you from buying it though. The sound quality is OUTSTANDING. Converting the music to a Mini disc takes away virtually no sound quality. If you appreciate good sound quality then buy this.

This is NOT a digital recorder. This will dub CD's and MP3s to the idiotic sonic stage software created by the woefully stupid minidisc division of Sony.

YOU CANNOT USE A MICROPHONE ON THIS UNIT.

Obviously they use the word "recorder" to falsely market this product. There are plenty of other actual minidisc recorders for the same price on Amazon. It's almost impossible to tell unless the picture shows a red colored hole on the side. All the minidisc products on this site claim to be recorders so it will be hard to tell what you are getting unless you find the specs on a different web site.

Of course once you get one that has a LINE/MIC in jak, the recordings are amazing.

I usually don't review things but I love this mp3 player. I think nycebo pretty much sums up the good. I bought the 16GB in July for 0 through Amazon Prime. It was more than I wanted to spend to replace my 3 year old Dell Jukebox 30GB but now I wish I'd saved a lot of frustration with syncing the Dell and it's slow hard drive and bought a Sony a long time ago. My only complaint is it comes with just a USB cable so you have to have a computer to charge it unless you buy the power adapter (which was not available when I bought mine) or something like the MusicPower Duet Two-USB Port AC Charger. I use the Sony plugged into my car stereo with the volume turned up about 2/3 of the way and the batteries still last forever. It has a lot of different audio settings but even on the default settings it still sounds almost as good as a CD on my 8 speaker stereo. It plays Napster files but does not sync well with the Napster software so I recommend using Windows Media Player.

I bought the Sony Walkman NWZ-A828, a month ago so I could listen to audiobooks while exercizing. I wanted to get away from the wired headset on my IPod, and this was Consumer Reports recommended. The only flaw in this player, and from my point of view a major one; the max range of the bluetooth transmitter in the player is 3 to 4 feet! Thats unobstructed! Placing the player in my left chest pocket causes drop outs, and the same goes if I drop it in my right hand pants pocket. I verified it's the transmitter, and not the head phones, by pairing it with the bluetooth earpiece from my cell phone, which I do use at ranges up to 15 feet from my phone!

This is my first portable mp3 player...I spent weeks studying players and reading reviews all over the web before I settled on this little beauty and I'm thoroughly pleased. The controls are very intuitive and easy, the sound is terrific (with my elderly bulky, clumsy stereo headphones.) The bluetooth headset doesn't fit me properly and I don't like neck bands so I have a DJ style bluetooth set on order, but it works just fine. Walking around without wires is great. Syncing with WMP 11 is a snap, software supplied is not needed. I'm retired now and walking my dogs with music accompanying me is so pleasant. This unit has some great features:

1. Bluetooth streaming is easy to use and very convenient. Wireless headset is very cool, never had a need to use the xlnt earbuds supplied with unit

2. Xlnt sound quality, there is is a myriad of options to for sound equalization and other audio options.

3. Very good interoperability with cell phone, when used as a stereo headset with a bluetooth phone will cut off music to answer phone and then start music after call. Supplied bluetooth headset can be used as replacement headset for phone.

I bought this hoping that it would trump my old mp3 player's 10-hour battery life. However, it's about the same. To be fair, I also turned on all the extra features for enhancing sound quality such as dynamic normalizer, sound optimizer, clear stereo, etc. But even so, it didn't come close to the advertised 30 hour battery life. After 8 hours of music time (no video playing), the battery icon displayed a quarter of its life remaining. Playing videos will decrease the battery life down to about 5 hours.

On the positive side, the video quality is excellent for a small screen. The included headphones are quite nice as well. I bought the purple one because I like its color. It's easy to use for creating play lists or organizing your files. The default memory size of 8 GB is fine since I don't plan on watching movies on this player. There are many options in the settings so you will have to play around a little. Overall, this mp3 player is a good choice for the price of 0.

You should also buy a cell phone sticker for the front because it scratches easily. Also, I don't find the speakers very useful.

P.S. I compare this model to my old model: Samsung 4 GB touchscreen.

I love pretty much everything about this. Play list making is easy. It can go anywhere. It's loud. It's got great sound- as in "Did you know there were background voices whispering on this song" great. Only real glitch is really just that if water (liquid of any sort) gets in the speakers you'll probably want to turn it off- and you'll end up hearing a crackle. It doesn't kill the speakers at all it's just best to avoid things like rain with this. Once it drys out it's fine. Would I buy it again- totally. I've had mine for almost a year at this point with no issues. Battery is still as fantastic as it was to start out.

Purchased for my daughter and she loves it. Radio sounds good. Speakers sound loud and headphones sound nice too. Lightweight and easy to find because of the color. I could easily say it also takes a beating very well, because she has dropped it several times. Highly recommend.

This is a "NEVER AGAIN." So, dear review reader, please take our advice and DON'T BUY IT the first time. Please Google "Sony Walkman Software Corruption." Be sure to read the 2006 article where Sony "admits the software has problems." Well guess what, it's 2010 and the software still STINKS! Our brief (and still pending) episode with Sony went like this:

We (hubby & I) bought 2 Walkmans (8G and 16G). Loved them...for one whole month
ERROR! Software connection Issue
Returned at store of purchase, got 2 replacement devices
ERROR! Software Connection Issue (on the 8G device).
Store of purchase says we must contact Sony.
Mailed Sony faulty device, Proof Purch, Original Receipt, etc.
Approved for refund (within 1 YR warranty period)
A month goes by...
Another month...

STILL WAITING! NO device and NO money back
In the meantime, second device has also failed.

Moral of the story: DON'T BUY IT! Just pay the extra $$$ for a nice iPod and be done with it. When we had an iPod issue, the iStore people fixed it SAME DAY and IN STORE.

It is the second portable digital media player I've owned (my first was an iPOD shuffle, yuck). Anyway, this Walkman, is pretty good for just listening to music. However, its' battery only lasts 2-3 hours when viewing videos or pictures with the brightness all the way up. Its' screen gets scratched easily and I wish it was a little bigger. A lot of the WMV files I try playing don't work. I hate it when the screen dimmer turns on when I'm viewing a photo. I also wish it had built-in speakers. Overall I think it's good as a storage device and/or music player; it's also good for the price (16GB for is a steal).

DSEE missing - Tittus -
I have replaced my old Sony MP4 2 GB expecting the same sound with more music space, but I never thought that I would missed the DSEE feature of my old partner.
The sound is pretty good but it took me a while to get used to it, however I must say that is definitely better than the I pods Nano that I have tested.
One important detail, the earphones were replaced by a portable Denon, that I highly recommend to get (AH-P372K).

The Sony mp3 player works fine for me! I really am impressed with it. I loaded all my Smooth Jazz CD's on it. However, I don't think it will go thirty hours on a charge. I use it plugged into my portable Sony stereo and just have it plugged in and charging while it is playing. I use it more for a music server than a portable listening source. I am not a regular user of ear buds or headphones. Highly recommend!

I use this mp3 player in my car and it has a number of glitches I find annoying.

First - the thing freezes up and resets itself often - I'd say about once or twice a week. It takes about 5-10 minutes for it to reset and start playing again, which amounts to a lot of lame Top-40 and mattress sale commercials on the radio. I bought this thing to avoid the radio!!

Second - it syncs to your entire hard drive library whenever you plug it into your PC, without regard for the fact that most of those tracks are already on it. The result is tons of duplicates. What ever happened to "xyz file already exists, copy anyway?" ??

Third - it's only 14.7 gb, not 16. False advertising is lame, Sony.

Fourth, looks like it's right now - I paid .99 - don't overpay!

On the plus side, I haven't had many problems with scratches, but then again I keep mine in the car and not my purse or pocket. I also don't use it for video. Battery life is good, plays at least 8 hours on a charge.

But, at the end of the day, the freezing and copying make this mp3 player more frustrating than enjoyable. Get something else.

I purchased this player as a replacement to an 8 gigabyte Sony, an NWZ-A818BLK, the battery to which was no longer keeping a proper charge. I wanted a companion to my 16 gigabyte Samsung Q2. I personally feel the Samsung has far superior performance when rendering classical music. It also has some features that I like better unrelated to music reproduction. But the Sony has superior audio characteristics for contemporary music. I was frankly disappointed that the NWZ-S639FBLK didn't have the same classy looking chrome trim and appeared to be a bit less stylish. I didn't expect the new unit to perform any differently than the other one either. I didn't expect it to have greater volume, or have a quieter noise floor (noticeable hiss during quieter passages), nor any better fidelity. I expected it to be about the same just with greater capacity. I was wrong on all counts. This unit is capable of going much louder while at the same time it has a dead quiet background. Likewise it sounds sharper, richer and more vibrant than the previous model. The down time between tracks may not be "zero" but it's darn close, practically unnoticeable. A local cell-phone business that advertises that they can work miracles on phones (such as replacing the screen on I-phones) seemed like a good option for replacing the battery in such a similar size and type of product. The gentleman said he'd do it for , parts AND labor - what a screaming deal. Beats throwing it away - I mention this as an option for those with players that might be salvageable who might not have thought to take it to such an establishment. This unit is a winner - being more stylish than the cheaper more readily available unit I sell at my place of work which I really wanted to avoid the commonality of. Nor is it the astronomical price of the X-series either. Now that I've had it a while I'd say that it IS a cooler looking unit than I thought it was at first. I just wish it came in a larger capacity. And on the same note - I wish manufactures would be honest and say "our operating system hogs up over a gigabyte of the available memory - making this a 14.7 gigabyte unit" and not call it a 16 gigabyte one. Hope this helps someone in their deliberations.

This walkman is so easy to operate. It has crystal clear reception on fm and is very simple to load music. I specifically bought it because of the drop and drag capabilities. I take it on my bike rides and working in the yard, mowing. It is just absolutely perfect. I will not need another MP3 player for a long time. Highly, highly recommended. I did also buy the bundle package of accessories also. I recommend the plastic cover. Everything is easy to access on the player thru the cover. One tip, I do not use the carrying case. I found a cell phone case is also excellent for protection.

Let me start by saying that this Sony Walkman MP3 player is the best player I have yet used. I have owned a lot of MP3 players. Zunes, Sansas, iPods (which are extremely over-rated, in my humble opinion), Cowon/iAudios, Philips, Nomads, iRivers, and more. Suffice it to say that this little guy is my favorite of the whole lot. It is small, has PHENOMENAL sound quality, long battery life and a fantastic user interface. I am somewhat of an audiophile, so sound quality is my first priority. It excels here. and by excels, I mean it could reproduce sound I didn't previously think possible for a portable music player. It sounds like there are 12 inch subs in my head coupled with my Razer ProTone headphones! The user interface allows you to browse your library by either ID3 info or folders. 90% of the players I have owned have only allowed for one or the other unless coupled with RockBox. This is extremely useful should you have a number of songs that don't have the ID3 info you are looking for or worse, have none at all.

This little guy is THIN, and so far, very durable. The screen is bright and it is easy to navigate through the UI. Set up a bit like a Zune, and a bit like a Philips, it is clear that Sony took the best of existing MP3 players and utilized them in this player.

My only complaint is that music transfer is a bit slow. While I was able to transfer about 6 gigs in 45 minutes, that's not as fast as I'd like. Oh well. It is easily overlooked in light of how phenomenal the player functions otherwise.

If you are on the edge about players, go with the Sony, I assure you, you will not regret it! Hope this helps!

Well, I was (and still am I guess) an IPOD fan and owned an 80 gb IPOD classic. I loved it to death for the two years I had it but it was recently stolen from me. I simply couldn't afford another IPOD of that size (it was an xmas present so I never spent a cent the first time around) so I started looking at the smaller IPODS or alternatives. I went with the sansa fuze (not a bad player but I had some issues with it..won't get into that here) so I took it back and decided to get this. Size (as long as it's 8gb or above) on a player isn't much of a concern to me since my music collection (2000 albums, easily) is so huge that there isn't a mp3 player out now that would ever hold it to begin with. Sure, its fun to say you have 9000 songs but you really can't listen to them all at once so I decided to tone it down to 16 gigs. This sony walkman is cheaper than the ipod of the same size so I went with the sony.

One of the best electronic decisions I ever made.

First off, this player sounds at least 20 times better than any IPOD with a rich full sound that envelops you so well that you can't even hear yourself think. There are multiple options to creat your own custom sounds and many settings to change how the music sounds to your ears. Very cool, way more audio options than an IPOD. It has a click will but it doesn't feel cheap at all and doesn't stick out and wobble like the with the fuze. It's integrated on the player surface and almost flush with it. The controls are well made and the touch click wheel on an ipod didn't always respond as fast as me but this does obviously. The bottom of the player has the headphone jack and USB port. The right side has the hold button and volume controls. The front has the click wheel with the play/pause button in the middle of the wheel. On the left of the wheel is the back/home button (click once to back up a menu or hold to take you to the main menu interface) and the right of the wheel is the option button (allows to many things, including deleting things from the player without having to plug it in) and you can hold that down to turn off. For ultimate customization, You can change the desktop color AND theme for the interface/background and it's more modern looking interface like you get on a touch screen cell phone.

And the coolest feature on this phone is the senseme option that scans your song collection and creates "mood" playlists based upon how your songs sound. For example, there is a mood "relax" and "energetic" and it puts songs in your playlist that it thinks best goes with these moods. It is very cool!

The headphones that come with it are barnone the best sounding earbuds I've ever heard in my life. Every electronic device ever come with average (or below average) sounding buds but this walkman is the exception. There is absolutely no reasons to invest in a better pair of headphones (unless you don't like earbuds).

I've just listed many pros but no cons...because there just isn't any cons to this amazing little mp3 player. The fact that this isn't anywhere near as popular as other players is such a crime and a shame.

this is just what i want. have nothing to say. the sound quality is better than ipod and zune. the feature is not as good as IPT, though. but what i need is just a "mp3," so i don't really care about the feature. great mp3(mp4). best buy. :)

Pros
- small build & portable
- 27+ hrs of continuous audio playback
- looks more sleek than 2nd or 3rd gen ipod nano
- very nice audio quality compare to iphone, ipod or other audio player at market

Cons
- doesnt have bluetooth (although find it rather useless feature)
- hard to use the playlist (took me hell long to figure it out)
- transfer song using media manager is slower than normal
- time shuffle rather stupid feature
- could only create playlist on pc
- earphone provided spoil easily
- no fm radio


Best-sounding MP3 player yet - dark ash -
It's simple - if you want the best sound of all time, buy this. I've played music on dozens of MP3 players, including the iPod (snore), the latest Samsung P3, the Cowon S9, the amazing-sounding previous generation iRivers, etc. - and I come back to this one every time. No other player can render this level of fidelity, with this full a sound, with this rich and well-rounded a bass. My litmus test is to 1) play a superb yet dynamically demanding recording (e.g., disc 2 of Hybrid's Soundsystem 01 - a very dense and complex techno recording that requires a good player to do justice to all of the detail), 2) with superb buds (Shure SE530), and 3) without EQ or FX of any kind. Only the Sony is able to do full justice without any sound augmentation. And it does it time and time again, on any kind of music you throw at it. Yes, i have some nits - the inability to change the speed at which one can fast-forward through a long piece key among them. But ultimately what I want from an MP3 player is awesome sound and this delivers it in spades. Also, the physical construction is simply excellent - it is wonderfully slim, yet dense thanks to the significant steel component. The dedicated volume rocker is perfect. Finally, battery life is unreal. The accompanying earbuds are also very good but definitely toast up the bass a lot -- too much so in my view.

(Note -- the more currently available and similar-looking NWZ438F does not deliver as good sound as this one - as I found to my disappointment. Very curious if the new touch-screen Sony players have the same sound circuitry as this one - if so, I'll get in line once prices come down a bit.)

The Sony 4g mp3 player is terrific!! Not only is it a beautiful shade of red, but the quality is terrific. I've had one for 2 years with NO problems, so I bought this identical one for my daughter. It lasts longer than the San Disk, as her first one that we bought at the same time, died out after a year. The only negative I can find with it, is that you cannot remove songs off of the player, or so I never found a way. But, that's okay, if I'm getting great quality for a very decent price. It's definitely worth purchasing.

I purchased this MP3 for my mother. It was her first MP3 player so I researched the easiest MP3's out there and found this one. It truely was easy for her to use and she got the hang of using it very quickly.
After using if for about 7 months, it just stopped working. Went through all the troubleshooting to no avail.
It does have a one year warranty...I found that they will not replace it with a new one, only refurb; the cost to ship and get the refurb, almost as much as the product cost new.
So, needless to say..she had to go buy a new one. Believe it or not, she bought the same one, but with 8Gb of storage.
Overall, good product, easy to use. Very unhappy with the warranty process.

This MP-3 player was ordered for my daughter. She thinks that it's the best thing ever. She's only had to charge it up once since we got it which is fabulous! The sound quality is excellent and it's just the right size. It came in a timely fashion after the order was made. I would order another one from the same company or refer it to others.
